加入美國國籍的好處：
想要在美國境內永久居住下去並不一定要獲得美國公民身份，外籍人士可以以永久居民的身份在美國無限期居住下去。盡管如此，由于公民身份的種種好處，很多永久居民還是希望能夠獲得公民身份。公民可以參加全國和地方選舉，而永久居民則不能參加選舉。公民可以隨意出入美國，不受時間的限制，而永久居民在離開美國的時候一定要小心注意時間問題，因爲在美國以外停留的時間超過一定限度以後，就會被認爲放棄永久居民身份。美國公民可以爲自己的外籍親屬申請進入美國，而永久居民則不能。
美國入籍宣誓誓詞：

“我在這裏鄭重宣誓：完全放棄我對以前所屬的外國親王，君主，國家或主權之公民資格及忠誠。我將支持及護衛美利堅合衆國的憲法和法律，對抗國內和國外一切敵人。我將真誠地效忠美國。當法律要求時，我願爲保衛美國拿起武器;當法律要求時，我會爲美國做非戰爭性之軍事服務;當法律要求時，我會在政府官員指揮下爲國家做重要工作。我在此自願宣誓：絕無任何心智阻礙，借口或保留。請上帝幫我。”
